GOVERNMENT STOOD FIRM ON ELECTORAL COMMISSIONER’S APPOINTMENT

THE Government has clarified that the recent appointment of the Dr Nicole Haley as the Commissioner of the PNG Electoral Commission is not against any fundamental laws of this nation, especially hiring a non-Papua New Guinea Citizen to hold a Constitutional office.

Despite ongoing media publication and online speculations of Dr Nicole not resuming her duties since her appointment, a month a go, and it is against the by-laws of the country, Chief Secretary to the Government Ivan Pomaleu brushed all rumours, adding that Dr Nicole’s appointment was according to the laws and regulations.

Chief Secretary Pomaleu added that the appointment process was per under the Section 126 (7) of the Constitution and Part II of the Organic Law on National and Local-level Government Elections.

Pomaleu urged the citizens not to spread speculation, further revealed that no political interferences were involved in this process of appointing the Commissioner.
