THE Government has approved K53 million under the Higher Education Loan Program to support students attending universities throughout Papua New Guinea.

Minister for Research, Science and Technology Kinoka Feo announced the funding during the official opening of the University of Goroka’s new Central Administration Building and auditorium in Goroka last week.

Mr Feo said the assistance is part of the Government’s efforts to improve access to higher education for students across the country.

He said students will receive between K4,000 and K7,000 under the program.

The Minister said the Government’s approach to higher education is focused on improving access, quality and relevance.

He said students must be provided with quality education that promotes honesty, Christian values and good character, while ensuring graduates are equipped to meet international standards.

Mr Feo said university education must also respond to the needs of Papua New Guinea’s economy and contribute to producing graduates with skills relevant to the country’s development.

The announcement comes as the Government continues to invest in infrastructure and student support at tertiary institutions, including the planned K1 billion dormitory development at the University of Goroka.
