PAPUA New Guinea and Australia are preparing to deepen their bilateral relationship as ministers from both countries meet for the 32nd Australia-Papua New Guinea Ministerial Forum in Port Moresby.

The forum marks the first meeting of its kind since the two countries became allies, signalling a new phase in their longstanding relationship.

Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles says the alliance has changed the character of the relationship between the two neighbouring countries.

Mr Marles said PNG and Australia had always maintained close ties, but their new status as allies strengthened their commitment to supporting one another and working together on shared priorities.

The discussions are expected to cover defence and security, economic relations and cooperation in areas that affect the development and wellbeing of people in both countries.

PNG Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko said the forum was an opportunity for the two governments to discuss issues of mutual interest and build on their relationship across health, education and security.

He said stronger cooperation was important to ensuring a safe, secure and prosperous future for Papua New Guinea, Australia and the wider Pacific region.

The meeting brings eight Australian ministers to PNG, according to Mr Marles, highlighting the importance Australia places on the bilateral partnership.
