MILNE BAY GOVT COMMITS TO STRENGTHEN AVIATION SECTOR

MILNE Bay Governor Gordon Wesley has welcomed the Gurney Airport upgrade as a major advancement for the province, saying the project will boost tourism, economic growth, and travel efficiency.

The provincial government wants to ensure the Connect PNG program continues past Alotau. They plan to use Gurney Airport as a central hub. This hub will connect the provincial capital to the islands and remote areas.

Governor Wesley called for fast action on regulatory approvals and certifications for district aerodromes. He specifically requested immediate clearance for three main airstrips, which are Losuia, Misima, and Guasopa.

The governor said operational airstrips will allow Gurney Airport to act as a feeder airport, giving more access to the outer island residents proper access to flight networks.

He said the project will improve the delivery of healthcare and education, create new local business opportunities and open doors for international visitors to explore the province.

The Milne Bay Provincial Government pledged to work closely with the National Airports Corporation, through a Memorandum of Understanding that was signed during the opening of the Gurney Airport last week.

Under active MoU, the province will support routine maintenance and upkeep of the facilities, assist with aviation search and rescue operations and develop new commercial activities within the airport terminal.
