Deputy Opposition Leader and Member for Chuave has launched legal proceedings to prevent the government from deliberating on controversial amendments to the Constitution, particularly section 145, which governs votes of no confidence.

Speaking during a press conference, the Deputy Opposition Leader expressed grave concerns over what he described as “self-serving” changes aimed at promoting political expediency rather than the national interest.

He said these legal proceedings are of a very serious nature because they deal with the Constitution of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, emphasizing that the proposed amendments undermine democratic principles.

The Deputy Opposition Leader criticized the government for using its numerical strength in Parliament to push unprecedented constitutional changes without due consideration of their long-term implications.

The amendments, which include extending the grace period for the government to avoid a vote of no confidence, were labeled as “nefarious” and “unconstitutional.” The Deputy Opposition Leader stressed that these changes deprive Members of Parliament of their right to hold the Executive Government accountable under section 145 of the Constitution. He asserted these rights of Members of Parliament cannot be deprived by any Prime Minister or Government.

The Deputy Opposition Leader called on all MPs to critically evaluate the government’s performance in their districts and provinces. Highlighting ongoing crises in law and order, inflation, healthcare, and education, he questioned the logic of expecting solutions from the same leadership that has failed to deliver progress over the past five years.
