As Papua New Guinea celebrates its golden jubilee, Central Province Governor Rufina Peter is calling for a “reset” to address emerging challenges and chart a new course for development. Speaking at a meeting organized by the Central Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), Governor Peter described 2025 as a year of repentance, restoration, and rebuilding.

The Governor linked the timing of the CCCI’s launch and the upcoming investment conference to the broader need for a foundation that ensures long-term economic growth. She said after 50 years, the people and administration of Central must acknowledge the areas where they fallen short and prepare for new challenges.

Governor Peter pointed to behavioral and attitudinal changes as critical factors in addressing law and order issues, fostering unity, and building a prosperous Central Province.

Governor Peter unveiled her administration’s four key priorities to transform Central Province. She emphasized the need for community-driven development, infrastructure improvement, economic empowerment, and equitable resource benefit-sharing.

The Governor lamented the traditional top-down approach to planning, stressing the need to empower rural communities, where 85% of the province’s population resides adding that the people must transition from subsistence agriculture and fisheries to commercial ventures to truly transform the economy.

Governor Peter also highlighted the importance of creating an enabling environment through improved utilities, transport, and communication infrastructure to support public and private sector initiatives.
