LAE METRO POLICE WARN OF INCREASED CRIME DUE TO ONGOING BLACKOUTS

By Martha LOUIS, MOROBE
Lae is experiencing a rise in crime linked to ongoing power outages, police warn.
Superintendent Chris Kunyanba, Lae Metropolitan Commander, said criminals exploit blackouts to carry out raids and robberies under cover of darkness.
“During blackouts, visibility is low, making it easier for criminals to target homes and businesses,” Kunyanba said.
Police have been using torches during patrols as streetlights and security systems fail. He urged power companies and business owners to notify police immediately when outages occur so they can increase patrols and warn residents.
Residents, especially those in vulnerable areas, are advised to secure their properties, avoid traveling at night, and report any suspicious activity.
“The safety of Lae depends on community cooperation with police,” the commander added.
With blackouts expected to continue, police remain vigilant to protect the community.
