THE University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) joined other educational institutions across the nation yesterday to commemorate the 4th anniversary of the passing of Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare, the Founding Father of Papua New Guinea.

The commemoration theme was “Persevering as a Nation Through the Values and Efforts of Our Founding Fathers.”

Students gathered at Forum Square to pay tribute and reflect on Sir Michael’s legacy through songs and a candlelight vigil.

Led by the Seventh Day Adventist Students Association was a parade that included a flag-raising ceremony, the singing of the national anthem, and a pledge to honor the nation.

The event was marked by an emotional performance from the Sogeri National School of Excellence Students Association, who sang the unity song, carrying hopes for a better PNG as students lit candles in front of a portrait of the Grand Chief.

In his welcome address, UPNG Student Representative Council (SRC) President, Mr. Clinton Maliaba, emphasized the significance of February 26th as a day to honor Late Michael Somare, who have contributed much to the country.

“Commemorating such legends is the least we can do to keep their legacies alive. This year is not only a year of reflection but a new era where we, as young leaders, must envision a future for our great and rich nation.”

A key highlight of the commemoration was the book review of “SANA,” the autobiography of Sir Michael Somare, presented by the UPNG Literary Society.

UPNG SRC Female Vice President Miss Florence Pill delivered an acknowledgment address, expressing gratitude to the SRC for organizing the event.

She also challenged her fellow students to draw inspiration from the Grand Chief’s achievements, saying that if he could raise the country alone amongst foreigners, they too have the potential to make a meaningful impact.
