Thirty-three participants successfully completed a 10-day Basic Counseling workshop facilitated by the Papua New Guinea Counsellors Association under Kokoda Track Foundation (KTF)  “Sanap Strong” project. The event took place over the weekend at Sananda Village, Oro Province.

The Sanap Strong project, implemented by the Kokoda Tracking Foundation (KTF), is an initiative aimed at combating gender-based violence (GBV), family and sexual violence, and child harm in Oro Province.

The project promotes a zero-tolerance approach to violence and focuses on upskilling community leaders to respond effectively to instances of violence in their communities.

KTF, as the major sponsor, played a key role in driving this initiative forward, working closely with the PNG Counsellors Association to provide effective training to community leaders from Sananda Village and surrounding areas.

Trainer Clement Waiker from PNGCA emphasized the importance of the workshop. He told the graduates that the skills they acquired during the week-long workshop would be invaluable in addressing and preventing violence in their communities.

Waiker stated that these skills are essential for understanding, preventing, and responding to violence in the community.

Mathias Gade, ward councilor for Sananda, acknowledged the KTF and PNGCA for the initiative and the successful completion of the workshop.

He urged the trainees to apply the knowledge and skills they gained to improve their community, villages, and Oro Province as a whole.

With the graduation of these 33 participants, the Sanap Strong project is paving the way for more informed and proactive responses to gender-based violence, helping to create a safer environment for everyone in Oro Province.
