NDC ALERTS MANUS PROVINCIAL ADMIN OF POTENTIAL TSUNAMI RISK FROM MANUS SUBMARINE VOLACANIC ACTIVITY

THE National Disaster Centre had advised the Manus Provincial Administration and the Provincial Disaster office of a potential tsunami threat, associated with a submarine volcano located in the Bismark sea.

Acting Director General – National Disaster Centre Lusete Laso mana said while currently there is no confirmed tsunami threat, there is a possibility that a significant volcanic eruption could generate tsunami waves that may affect coastal communities within region.

In a letter to the Manus Provincial Administration, the National Disaster Centre strongly recommends that, the Manus Provincial Disaster office raise public awareness on the naturals warning signs of tsunami.

The signs including, strong or prolonged ground shaking, sudden unusual rise or fall in sea level, loud roaring sound coming from the ocean-similar to the sound of an aircraft or train.

Lusete stated, at present PNG’s monitoring systems do not have the capability to continuously monitor this submarine volcano or provide real time warnings recording its activities.

Acting Director General Lusete emphasised the provincial authorities remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to enhance community preparedness.

The letter was also copied to Chairman of National Disaster Centre Hari John Akipe, Chief Secretary to Government Mr Ivan Pomaleu and the Dr Billy Joseph, Minister responsible for National Disaster Centre, PNG Fire and NVS.
