EARLY CAMPAIGN IS ILLEGAL; ELECTORAL COMMISSION

ACTING Electoral Commissioner Margreth Vagi has again cautioned the nation that early campaigning is unlawful and those caught doing it will face penalties.

Acting-Commissioner Vagi singled out that supporters, intending candidates or political parties caught or suspecting of breaching the Electoral Laws will be fined under Electoral Act or National Laws where applicable.

She also warned that intending candidates will be disqualified from contesting and also Political Patries.

Under Electoral Laws, lobbying and campaigning must happen after the Issue of Writs and Nominations, which she added that for 2027 National General Elections, the Writs will be Issued in April, 2027.

Acting Commissioner Vagi further added that early campaign also includes social media or online platform campaigning, lobbying, poster and associations.
